The beautiful track “ Janani Mein Ram Doot Hanuman” still rings in my ears as I think of my Sunday afternoons as a child watching the movie on Cartoon Network.

The theme of good versus evil was so well depicted that it appealed to both kids and adults alike. But it wasn’t just the animation that captured our hearts, it’s also the screenplay and the authentic storytelling. The gorgeous fusion style of animation between the different schools of animation - Manga from Japan, Disney from the US, and Ravi Varma from India blew our minds even when we did not understand the technicalities of the art back then. A masterful collaboration between Japanese and Indian animators - Yugo Sako and Ram Mohan, the film had very simple and elegant visuals with animation techniques well ahead of its time. But there will always remain an honest but eerie sense of belonging to the animated movie. Of course we are still obsessed with the household phenomenon Ramayana, the ‘human’ live-action adaptation that aired on Doordarshan for the longest time (and has made a television comeback during the pandemic). And even after two whole decades since it’s release, it has a special place in the viewers’ hearts. That’s just how elaborate-yet-flawless it was. But even if you’re none of these things, you must’ve still loved it as a ’90s kid. Thematically, the Ramayana explores human values and the concept of dharma. If you’re a mythology geek and an anime fan, you must’ve absolutely loved the Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, the animated masterpiece that aired back in 1992. Incidentally the first letter of every 1000 verses (total 24) make the Gayatri mantra. The Ramayana consists of 24,000 verses in seven books (kāṇḍas) and 500 cantos (sargas), and tells the story of Rama (an avatar of the Hindu supreme-god Vishnu), whose wife Sita is abducted by Ravana, the king of Lanka (current day Sri Lanka). The name Ramayana is a tatpurusha compound of Rāma and ayana ("going, advancing"), translating to "Rama's Journey".

It depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, the ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal wife, and the ideal king. It is ascribed to the Hindu sage Valmiki and forms an important part of the Hindu literature (smṛti), considered to be itihāasa. The Ramayana is one of the two great epics of Hinduism, the other being the Mahabharata. The Ramayana is one of the great Hindu epics.
